Whistleblower suit costs nursing home $1.6M

LTC Liability Monitor, December 21, 2004

A lawsuit brought by two whistleblowers against a Chicago nursing home alleging neglect, abuse, and poor living conditions has been settled, reported Health Insurance Law Weekly.

Managers of Maxwell Manor have agreed to pay more than $1.6 million to the federal government and the state of Illinois to settle a portion of the claim against them. The government's complaint accused the home for the mentally ill of physical and sexual abuse, using medication as punishment, improper supervision, and unsafe and unsanitary living conditions, according to Health Insurance Law Weekly.
