Study: Consumers support best-practice guidelines, rewards programs

Quality Improvement Monitor, December 16, 2004

Eighty percent of U.S. consumers would want their physicians to use best-practice guidelines for treatment and diagnosis, according to a new study from the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association.

Seventy-eight percent of those surveyed said they would they would find value in having information about how well physicians apply best-practice guidelines, and 68% said they would be likely to choose a physician who uses the guidelines.

Sixty-eight percent of respondents also said they would favor health programs that reward physicians who use best practices.

"This study shows that consumers want to know that they are receiving the best care possible," said Allan Korn, chief medical officer of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association. "Throughout the country, Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies are collaborating with physicians and hospitals and creating quality improvement programs that help give consumers the peace of mind they are seeking."
