Massachusetts-wide EHR system possible within five years

EHR Connection, December 13, 2004

Massachusetts may be the first in the nation to implement a statewide electronic medical record system, granting doctors access to any patient's medical records, reports the Boston Herald.

The project, an initiative by the Massachusetts e-Health Collaborative, received a $50 million investment boost from BlueCross BlueShield of Massachusetts and will begin as a pilot program in three Bay State communities and span a five-year implementation, according to the Herald.

The Massachusetts e-Health Collaborative is a nonprofit group consisting of 34 statewide institutions that include hospitals, insurers, and physician groups. Indiana launched a similar program, the first in the country, allowing 880,000 residents with Medicare to have computer access to their medical records.
