Teach nurses about visually assessing patients beyond medical care

Healthcare Security Weekly, December 9, 2004

Security directors should teach nurses to assess patients for more than just medical reasons.

"Your assessment of a patient goes beyond just medical," says Fredrick Roll. "I tell nurses that things are changing and there's a need for violence training."

To ensure that your nurses don't get hurt, teach them to be on the look out for odd behavior, potential weapons, and other off-setting things in appearance.

"Assessment begins visually," Roll says, noting that nurses should feel comfortable observing patients and visitors. "People get assaulted and often don't know how they got into the situation. You need to catch behaviors in the early stages and give some thought to what it might mean."
