AHA quality improvement program wins HHS award
Quality Improvement Monitor, December 9, 2004
The American Heart Association's (AHA) Get With The Guidelines program received the 2004 Innovation in Prevention Award on Tuesday from Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Tommy Thompson.
HHS recognized the program as the leading hospital-based healthcare improvement system for cardiac and stroke patients. The program teaches patients about cardiovascular care with customized education materials based on the patient's profile.
Patients receive education materials upon discharge. Providers can track a patient's risk profile through an online management tool.
Studies have shown that educating patients while still in the hospital help reduce their risk of a second heart attack or stroke, according to the AHA.
The Innovation in Prevention Award is part of the Bush administration's HealthierUS initiative, a campaign to help Americans lead healthier lives. Visit www.healthierus.gov for more information.
