Brailer rallies IT vendor community

EHR Connection, December 6, 2004

David Brailer, MD, PhD, national coordinator of health information technology (IT), met with members of the top healthcare IT companies during the Annual Convention and Exhibition of the American Health Information Management Association held in Washington, DC, in October. The meeting was a forum for discussion of private industry collaboration on healthcare IT initiatives laid out by the federal government in its July report.

Brailer was encouraged by the vendor community's positive response to his request for a low-cost turnkey product. At this stage, demand for electronic records products is low because the market is still quite risky. The goal is a level playing field, he said, which is the only way to grow the market. One reason for vendor enthusiasm is that they don't see "the heavy hand of government," Brailer said. "I think there's lots of cynicism in the industry, but they know more can be done."
