Upgrade to health network adds new language capabilities
Infection Control Monitor, November 19, 2004
A monitoring system designed to identify bioterrorist attacks or new disease outbreaks speaks volumes-of languages, the Associated Press reports.
The Global Health Intelligence Network previously scanned only English language news reports for indications of infectious disease problems. But now it will scan reports in six other languages, including French, Arabic, Russian, and Spanish.
The Nuclear Threat Initiative, a U.S.-based nonprofit dedicated to reducing the threat of nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons, funded part of the $1.3 million upgrade.
The system scours thousands of news reports each month that the computer selects from public databases. That information is then sent to the World Health Organization, along with public health data.
