Four quick tips to prepare for infectious patients
Pharmacy Regulation Resource, December 1, 2004
Effective January 1, 2005, JCAHO standard IC.6.10 states that organizations must prepare to respond to an influx, or the risk of an influx, of infectious patients. For many hospital pharmacies, dealing with external risks has always been a critical part of their responsibilities in infection control.
Here are four quick tips to help meet this standard in the pharmacy:
- Make sure you have the appropriate amount of antibiotics and other medications on hand. If not, have a process to obtain them in the event of an outbreak or disaster.
- Know how your hospital plans to distribute medications to patients. Work with hospital leadership and the community to develop these plans.
- Hold mock disaster drills.
- Keep current information on hand. The pharmacy can provide reference materials on treating certain infectious diseases to care providers.
