AAAASF-accredited ASCs deemed to meet Medicare standards
Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, November 30, 2004
Decision-makers from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) have approved the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities Inc. (AAAASF) for continued recognition as a national accrediting organization.
According to documents filed with the Federal Register, the AAAASF was determined, following a period of evaluation that began with the group's application in July, to be in possession of accreditation standards for ASCs that met or exceeded Medicare's conditions for coverage. This led the HHS and CMS to make the decision that ASCs that have been accredited by the AAAASF are deemed to meet conditions for Medicare coverage and can therefore receive reimbursemnt for services.
Over the last several months, the AAAASF underwent an evaluation process in which their organizational and programmatic capabilities were examined in detail. The evaluation included an onsite review of AAASF's corporate policies, procedures for training and monitoring surveyors, and a look at survey review and decision-making processes for accreditaton, among other factors.
AAAASF's approval to act as a national accrediting organization for ASCs is effective through November 26, 2009.
