New research to help fight emerging infectious diseases

Infection Control Monitor, November 12, 2004

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is supporting new infectious disease research in several major areas, including influenza vaccine effectiveness.

The CDC awarded $5 million in new grants for peer-reviewed studies to fight emerging infectious diseases, including antimicrobial resistance, West Nile virus infection, and organ transplant-associated infections.

Each study will address an important public health concern and apply the findings to improve health.

The following are highlights of the studies:

* Influenza vaccine: The project includes providing a rapid analysis of influenza vaccine effectiveness to better understand how vaccinations protect people.

* Antimicrobial resistance: Among other research, investigators will study the impact of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus on length of hospitalization and cost of treatment.

* West Nile virus: Research includes studying the epidemiology and transmission of the virus in urban areas of the southeastern United States to increase understanding of the ecology of West Nile virus transmission.

* Organ transplant infection: Investigators will improve surveillance of invasive fungal infections in transplant patients in order to make recommendations for prevention.
