Educate employees about hospital theft

Healthcare Security Weekly, November 10, 2004

Statistically employees commit more theft in an organization because there is constant opportunity to do so, says Fredrick Roll, MA, CHPA-F, CPP, president of Roll Enterprises, Inc., in Morrison, CO.

Security must educate and train staff, as well as develop a crime prevention program enlisting employees as part of the theft prevention team.

Educate staff by teaching the ramifications of theft like employees' pay is based on the organization's profit. If the organization suffers shrinkage, this affects the budget, Roll says. As a result, "administrators may not be able to give the amount of money they want to employees," he says.

"It's in everyone's best interest to do what they can to cut back on theft," Roll says.
