Neglect case puts DHS guardianship under scrutiny

LTC Liability Monitor, November 10, 2004

The Oklahoma Department of Human Services (DHS) is considering creating a list of facilities where it will not place patients after an elderly man in its care was allegedly neglected in an area nursing home, reported the Tulsa [OK] World. The Health Department cited the home with five deficiencies in the care of the resident, including failure to prevent weight loss and dehydration, fourteen falls, and four urinary tract infections, two of which led to hospitalization.

The resident's family claims to have approached DHS to no avail with photographs of human bite marks, black eyes and a broken vertebra, according the World. The resident has been in the care of DHS since 2002.
