EHR recommendations will be released within a year
EHR Connection, November 8, 2004
The Physicians' Electronic Health Record Coalition (PEHRC) plans to release EHR recommendations within 12 months in a Consumer Report format. Physicians can evaluate and compare products based on specialty peer review.
The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), the American Health Information Management Association, and the National Alliance for Health Information Technology, through their certification commission, are also developing voluntary certification standards to help physicians decide among systems.
HIMSS offers an Ambulatory EHR Selector-a tool that supplies doctors with a list of EHR systems that meet their criteria. Physicians can choose from more than 300 features and compare products. Physicians must pay a $149 annual fee to use the service, and vendors pay $499 annually to be included in the database.
In June, Eric S. Fishman, MD, an orthopedic surgeon in Florida launched EMRConsultant.com-a free service to help doctors find the right system. Doctors complete an online questionnaire and within 24 hours, Fishman delivers 3-5 product recommendations. To make a profit, vendors pay Fishman a referral fee.
