Nursing home study results published

LTC Liability Monitor, November 3, 2004

In a study of 132 nursing homes in Missouri, 35 percent failed at least once to prevent an accident, 30 percent treated bedsores inadequately or not at all, and 27 percent did not provide needed medical services, reported the Kansas City [MO] Star. Eleven facilities had seven or more severe violations such as amputations or deaths.

The Star-which examined the records of area homes that received federal money from Medicare and Medicaid-found staffing to be the greatest contributor to a poorly functioning home. Nationally, the most compliant homes are those in states with strict regulations and tough enforcement, reported the Star.
