Mandatory family notification debated
LTC Liability Monitor, November 3, 2004
The possibility of the Providence, RI, Health Department taking over the notification of family members of mistreated nursing home residents is coming up against strong opposition from the state nursing home lobby, according the Providence [RI] Journal. Currently, when an inspector finds a resident isn't being treated properly, the decision of whether to notify or not belongs to the facility in which the resident is living.
The chairman of the board of directors for a Rhode Island nursing home association told state officials compulsory family notification would lead to excess focus on other deficiencies in the home and may lead to more lawsuits, reported the Journal. He suggested the Health Department continue to use the regulations that already exist, such as stopping new admissions, replacing an administrator and ordering a nursing home to hire more staff.
