Pharmacist involvement with ambulatory care clinics grows

Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, November 2, 2004

According to new information released by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), the ambulatory care industry is seeing more interaction than ever between patients and pharmacists.

The 2004 ASHP Survey of Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Practice in Health Systems studied more than 250 health systems, and found that close to 30% of them had at least one clinic-anticoagulation, oncology, primary care/family practice, and diabetes-with pharmacist involvement.

Pharmacists were found to be making strides in patient interaction when it came to getting involved with adverse drug reaction tracking, providing written/oral information when delivering new prescriptions to patients, and conducting medication-management programs. Of the variety of different ambulatory care settings in which pharmacist involvement was seen to be growing, Veterans Affairs (VA) facilities were found to offer a particularly high number of opportunities.

The survey itself will be published in the December 15 issue of the American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy.
