Most executives to adopt HIT soon, says survey

EHR Connection, November 1, 2004

Despite cost cited as the biggest hurdle to EHR adoption in healthcare facilities, 71% of surveyed executives recognize the financial value of HIT projects in their facilities. Eighty-eight percent report they are either currently implementing an EHR project or plan to do so within the next 6 months, according to Capgemini survey results in Modern Physician.

This change in executive-level attitudes is most likely a reflection of government HIT initiatives, evidence of financial and quality return, and "it's the right thing to do from a patient safety and quality of care perspective."

Executives suggest the government develop uniform technology standards, provide financial subsidies or tax credits to encourage stakeholder EHR adoption, mandate compliance, educate physicians and the public, and establish a federal department to provide national supervision.

The greatest barriers to HIT adoption named by survey respondents are capital costs, physician buy-in, lack of technical standards, adding more work to an overburdened staff, and privacy concerns, according to the Web site.
