Bush, Kerry will push HIT

EHR Connection, October 29, 2004

President George W. Bush and Democratic presidential nominee Sen. John Kerry (Mass.) both say, if elected, he will focus on information technology, such as electronic medical records, to improve quality of care and reduce medical errors, according to the New England Journal of Medicine.

Both candidates explained their plan to expand access to health benefits:

  • Bush plans to promote HIT to quickly improve health care, save lives, and save money. His goal is to provide Americans with electronic medical records within 10 years.
  • Kerry plans to require private insurers who work with the federal government to adopt advanced information systems for medical record management and give healthcare providers incentive bonuses. His goal is to provide private electronic medical records by 2008.
