HIMSS creates vendor advisory council

EHR Connection, October 26, 2004

The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) created a vendor advisory council open to both members and nonmembers to offer input to the Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology, according to Health Data Management (HDM).

The commission will lead a private-sector driven effort to certify HIT products, and expects to complete a first-step certification process for ambulatory care electronic medical records products for pilot implementation by the summer of 2005. EHR certification programs will follow in coming years, reports HDM.

If the certification commission is successful, the federal government will incorporate its programs in federal policies to develop a national health information infrastructure, David Brailer, MD, PhD, national coordinator for health information technology, recently told HDM.

Note: HIMSS, the American Health Information Management Association, and the National Alliance for Health Information Technology formed the certification commission in July.
