Patient escape results in apparent suicide

Healthcare Security Weekly, October 24, 2004

Bergen (NJ) Regional Medical Center will hire a consultant to review security after a psychiatric patient escaped last week and committed suicide by stepping in front of a commuter train, www.newjersey.com reported.

The patient manipulated a locked door to escape from the hospital's chemical dependency unit, hospital officials said. The patient ended up on the tracks of a commuter train and died in an apparent suicide.

Bergen Regional President Joseph Gallagher said he believes that security measures are good, but will still hire a consultant conduct a comprehensive security review.
