How security can help in drug theft investigations

Healthcare Security Weekly, October 24, 2004

If you're interested in helping employee drug theft investigations at your hospital, then talk to your pharmacy department director, who probably handles the majority of the cases. In the November issue of Healthcare Security and Emergency Management, Don Bogardus, MPA, CHPA, CPP, safety and security director for Banner Health system's chain of hospitals in seven states, offers the following advice for security directors interested in getting involved:

"Security directors should approach the pharmacy director and express interest in this area. A security director should say, 'I'd like to be involved in helping either through surveillance or some other assistance.' Approach the other department directors in a low-key manor that shows you want to help. Make them feel comfortable. The key is to show your genuine concern about improving employee and patient security.

"If security directors get involved in a drug theft case, never suggest arresting the employee. Instead, play a more passive role, especially if you'd like to continue working on drug theft cases. Other staff members will suggest arrest if necessary."
