U.S., Canada struggling with C. difficile strains

Infection Control Monitor, October 8, 2004

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) researchers are testing strains of Clostridium difficile to see if they are related to samples taken from hospitals in Quebec where an epidemic strain has emerged, the Canadian Press reports.

Several United State hospitals have seen a strain of Clostridium difficile with properties linked to increased virulence. Researchers are checking whether that bacteria strain is responsible for the dramatic increase in cases and severity of the disease in parts of this country.

The strain researchers are testing is not new, but it appears to have acquired more resistance to antibiotics.

In order to keep the strain from spreading, CDC researchers say healthcare facilities must undergo better surveillance and infection control measures.
