UNM scientists investigating new bacteria-fighting strategies
Infection Control Monitor, September 24, 2004
Researchers at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center are using the human body as a model in their investigation of bacteria-fighting strategies, the Albuquerque Tribune reports.
Their research focuses on how white blood cells fight bacterial infections. Their efforts could lead to new drugs that reduce the medical community's reliance on antibiotics. Scientists began studying the microscopic interactions between bacteria and human cells, and from there researchers used that information to perform animal experiments.
The scientists are looking to find new ways to slow infections down and give the body a chance to kill off the infections naturally. The next step is to use the information they have gathered to see how it could apply to other diseases, such as cystic fibrosis and AIDS.
