New legislation would make hospital-acquired infections public in CA
Infection Control Monitor, September 17, 2004
Legislators in California approved a measure that would require hospitals to collect and report their infection rates to regulatory agencies and the public, KXTV (Sacramento, CA) reports.
With such information, the public could select facilities for treatment with the lowest infection rates. The California Healthcare Association opposes the legislation, claiming that the collection process is flawed, which could lead to misleading information to the public. Hospital-acquired infections account for as many as 9,600 deaths each year in California.
The legislation is now in the hands of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger for consideration.
