For-profit facilities cited more often

LTC Liability Monitor, October 21, 2004

Nursing home inspection records in Kansas and Missouri found for-profit facilities received 40% more deficiencies than not-for-profits, according to an analysis by the Kansas City [MO] Star. For-profit skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) received 10.2 violations per facility compared to not-for-profits' 7.4 citations. The study also found for-profit nursing homes provided 20 fewer minutes of nursing care per resident per day. Because for-profit SNFs care for a higher percentage of Medicaid residents-and are not always reimbursed for the entire cost of residents' care-they have fewer dollars available for staffing, a Kansas Health Care Association spokesperson told the Star. For-profit SNFs experienced more turnover-with administrators seven times more likely to change jobs-which may also contribute to the discrepancies.
