Settlement reached in Tennessee nursing home fire

LTC Liability Monitor, October 21, 2004

A Murfreesboro, TN-based nursing home company settled 28 of the 32 lawsuits stemming from a September 2003 fire at one of its facilities, reported the Associated Press (AP). National HealthCare Corp. owns the Nashville, TN nursing home where a fire resulted in 15 deaths. Families of the victims accused National HealthCare Corp. of negligence because the home did not have a sprinkler system, which was not required at the time of the fire. The company agreed to spend at least $10 million on sprinkler installation for its facilities following the blaze. In June, sprinkler systems became a legal requisite in Tennessee after another nursing home fire killed five in January of this year, according to AP. Three cases against National Healthcare Corp. remain in mediation and one more case has not yet entered mediation.
