HHS awards grant money for HIT projects
EHR Connection, October 18, 2004
The Department of Health and Human Services awarded $139 million in grants and contracts to promote EHR adoption-$50 million already appropriated by Congress for first-year funding.
The money will:
- Fund more than 100 grants to communities, hospitals, providers, and healthcare systems- all in various stages of IT implementation with special focus on rural communities-to promote healthcare IT access
- Develop statewide and regional networks in Colorado, Indiana, Rhode Island, Tennessee, and Utah to guarantee private, secure PHI exchange among healthcare providers
- Create a National Health Information Technology Resource Center to be a repository for best practices and technical help for grant recipients.
Dr. David Brailer, national coordinator for health information technology, told Government Computer News, "I view these awards as a building block to advance the adoption of electronic health records."
