Hospital security increased after parking lot rape
Healthcare Security Weekly, October 15, 2004
McAllen (TX) Medical Center increased security this summer after a 14-year-old girl was raped in the parking lot, the Brownsville Herald reports.
Pedro Cesar Torres, 22, of Alamo, TX, plead guilty on September 20 to charges of aggravated sexual assault and received a 30-year prison sentence.
On the evening of June 12, the victim slept in a van in the hospital parking lot while her mother worked the overnight shift. While breaking into cars in the parking lot, Torres found the girl and raped her, according to police reports.
In response to the crime, the hospital increased parking lot lighting and added two to three security officers to patrol the area, hospital spokeswoman Stephanie Reyes told the Herald.
