Resident-on-resident abuse a growing problem
LTC Liability Monitor, October 14, 2004
After resident-on-resident violence resulted in death at a Connecticut nursing home last month, state lawmakers are considering solutions, the Associated Press (AP) reported.
Although staff abuse has historically been a source of concern, the number of cases related to resident-on-resident violence is growing. State ombudsmen received more than 3,700 complaints about this type of abuse in 2002, as compared with 2,500 in 1997, according to AP.
Consumer advocates find fault in the nursing home practice of admitting mentally ill residents who require more care than the facilities can provide. Connecticut legislators are considering increased funding for nursing homes with a large population of residents with dementia or other potentially difficult conditions.
