U.S. faces flu vaccine shortage after major supplier closes
LTC Liability Monitor, October 7, 2004
America's supply of flu vaccine was cut in half on Tuesday, as British regulators suspended drug maker Chiron Corp's license due to manufacturing problems at its Liverpool, England facility, Associated Press Online reported.
The company will not be shipping their vaccine anywhere this year-which means the U.S. will not be receiving the 46 million doses it anticipated. Health officials urge providers and consumers to voluntarily ration the vaccine, saving it for high-risk people, such as the elderly.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is working with the nation's other supplier, Aventis, to alter its distribution of 54 million doses to compensate for areas that were depending on Chiron, according to Associated Press Online.
