Check out 2004 medication survey concerns
Pharmacy Regulation Resource, October 6, 2004
The following checklist is based on information from hospitals that the JCAHO surveyed to date in 2004. This will provide you with the latest medication- and pharmacy-related issues that JCAHO surveyors check out both in the pharmacy and throughout the medication management process.
Any "no" answer to the following questions may increase your risk of JCAHO citations:
- Do you review all medication orders (JCAHO standard MM.4.10)?
Do you counsel patients about medications (JCAHO standard MM.5.10)? - Do you label a medication container for drug products that are prepared but not administered immediately (JCAHO standard MM.4.30)?
- Do you have a policy for pro re nata (PRN), or "as needed," orders if your hospital deems them acceptable for use (JCAHO standard MM.3.20)?
