Doctor fired for bringing gun to work

Healthcare Security Weekly, October 3, 2004

A doctor who left a loaded handgun in an employee bathroom at Salem (MA) Hospital lost his job last week after an in-house investigation, the Associated Press reported.

The state Board of Registration in Medicine is still investigating the incident.

Richard L. Pinegar, MD, 52, had a valid firearm license, and brought a revolver to work to protect him when walking to his car late at night.

While working an overnight shift, another employee discovered the gun in the bathroom and contacted hospital security. The hospital has a policy that no one, including employees, is allowed to bring weapons into the building.
