New law requires standardize security officer training

Healthcare Security Weekly, September 19, 2004

Beginning on October 1, Connecticut security officers must undergo standardized training for jobs, the Stamford Advocate reported.

The law requires security officers to take a state-approved, eight-hour course on basic safety and criminal justice issues.

"The lack of training for security guards has been a huge problem over the years," Thomas Sweeney, chief of the Glastonbury Police Department and leader of the Connecticut Police Chiefs Association, told the Advocate. "In the past, we've had people in uniform with no training."

Security officers must complete the course and score higher than 70% to be certified for employment. Armed security officers must also take an additional eight hour-weapons training course.

Connecticut previously had no state regulations for security officers.
