Healthcare Security Weekly, September 17, 2004
Security officers in a New York hospital couldn't stop a gunmen from entering the hospital, kidnapping his wife, and shooting a hospital employee last week, Newsday reported.
Miguel Carrasquillo went to Elmhurst Hospital Center at 8 a.m. on Saturday, September 11, and began arguing with his wife. Earlier that day, hospital security were warned about Carrasquillo, since his wife placed an order of protection against him. However, when Carrasquillo arrived with a gun, hospital security said they couldn't subdue him because they were unarmed.
Carrasquillo shot a hospital employee who tried to intervene in the neck. He then dragged his wife away. The employee is in stable condition.
The hospital union called a press conference requesting the state legislature allow hospital security officers to carry guns.
