CA facility to be unionized after two-year struggle
LTC Liability Monitor, September 16, 2004
After a two-year delay, workers at Sonoma [CA] Health Care Center will join the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), according to PR Newswire.
Although employees voted for unionization in May 2002, the Ensign Group-the facility's operator-filed objections claiming community leaders were perpetuating coercion and confusion for workers.
On August 31, the National Labor Relations Board dismissed the objections and upheld the employees' vote to join SEIU 250, the state's largest healthcare workers' union.
The facility must now negotiate contracts for an estimated 70 employees-including certified nursing assistants and staff in activities, dietary, laundry, and maintenance departments-who became members of the union, according to PR Newswire.
