FDA seeks comment on bed safety measures
LTC Liability Monitor, September 8, 2004
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) wants healthcare providers and hospital bed manufacturers to comment on draft safety guidelines the agency issued last week, according to a press release.
The guidelines are meant to help reduce the incidence of patient entrapment in hospital and nursing home beds. During the past 19 years, 358 people have died and another 111 have been injured as a result of entrapment.
The victims are often frail or confused, including the elderly and handicapped, according to the FDA press release. The draft guidance identifies seven areas where there is potential for entrapment, such as spaces between the rails and the mattress.
