Terrorists may target VA hospitals

Healthcare Security Weekly, September 5, 2004

Officials warned last week that Al-Qaida may attack Veterans Affairs hospitals, the Associated Press reported.

The FBI and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported that VA hospitals may be an attractive alternative to heavily guarded military locations. While there is no credible intelligence of a threat, officials reported suspicious activity at U.S. medical facilities and urged institutions to beef up security.

"These facilities may be considered attractive targets due to their association with the military and a perception that such an attack may be more successful than an attack against traditional military targets, which generally maintain a more robust security posture," a DHS bulletin said.
