Alabama SNF to boost ergonomics efforts, sidestep citation
LTC Liability Monitor, August 26, 2004
An Alabama skilled nursing facility (SNF) entered into an agreement with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to settle an ergonomics-related citation, according to an agency press release.
OSHA announced yesterday that Jacksonville Health and Rehabilitation, LLC, based in Tuscaloosa, will adopt specific measures to reduce back and shoulder injuries for staff who lift residents at its Jacksonville location. During an inspection, the OSHA Birmingham area office reviewed the SNF's injury and illness records and discovered a number of nursing assistants suffered musculoskeletal injuries resulting in lost work time and restricted duty.
The company also agreed to update employee training programs to ensure proper use of mechanical lifts, implement policies regarding mechanical lift maintenance, and evaluate other devices designed to lower musculoskeletal injuries among direct caregivers, according to the release.
