Think before renaming your infant abduction code

Healthcare Security Weekly, August 23, 2004

While some hospitals are changing infant abduction codes from a code pink to code amber to align with law enforcement's amber alert, consider what it means.

Remember your infant abduction code is like a secret password, says Cathy Nahirny, case analysis and support manager for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in Alexandria, VA.

"Not everyone knows what it means if you use a code pink," Nahirny says, noting that most of the public understands what an amber alert means.

A code amber paged throughout the hospital could raise concerns of new moms and even visitors with children, Nahirny says.
