Facilities cope with hurricane evacuations
LTC Liability Monitor, August 19, 2004
Hurricane Charley forced some Florida long-term care facilities to put their evacuation plans into action during the past week.
Seventeen nursing homes in Pinellas County were ordered to evacuate, and residents were moved to nursing homes or hospitals on higher ground, the St. Petersburg Times reported. One Clearwater assisted living facility evacuated its residents to a local hotel, promising champagne, beer, and poker while there.
In the hurricane's aftermath, many central Florida hospitals are functioning at or above full capacity to accommodate those who cannot be discharged to nearby long-term care facilities due to power outages, according to the Orlando Sentinel.
