14 indicted in multi-million dollar Medicare fraud
LTC Liability Monitor, August 12, 2004
Last week, federal agents charged 14 people for defrauding Medicare of more than $8 million through a false-billing scheme, according to the [Fort Lauderdale, FL] Sun Sentinel.
Four Florida assisted living facilities (ALFs)-Jene's Retirement Living, Family Rest Home, Interamerican Boarding Home, and La Covadonga Retirement Living-were involved in Medicare fraud, allegedly supplying resident names and records to rehabilitation firms in the Broward and Miami-Dade area. The rehab companies would then use the information to create fraudulent bills, and pay the ALFs a kickback, according to the U.S. Attorney's office.
Ricardo Choi, Elliot Housley, and Mark Anthony were arrested for allegedly running the rehab firms. The three men hid their gains through offshore companies, prosecutors told the Sun Sentinel.
