Rx for medical school reform
Physician Practice Advisor, August 10, 2004
In order to best prepare doctors for the rapidly changing healthcare needs in the United States, medical education in this country has to be changed significantly, according to "Educating Doctors to Provide High Quality Medical Care," a July report by a panel of medical school deans convened by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC).
The report calls for improvement to all three phases of physician education: medical school, residency training, and continuing medical education. Changes include:
- changing the content and structure of "clinical clerkships" so that medical students will be exposed to a better balance of inpatient, ambulatory, and community-based medical settings
- recognizing that doctors in practice are most likely to treat chronically ill patients, and providing young doctors with more opportunities during residency to care for them
- targeting continuing medical education on topics and skills that will best help doctors help their patients.
