State law strengthens nursing home accountability
LTC Liability Monitor, August 4, 2004
A new Massachusetts law promotes the creation of another type of group that nursing homes must answer to-but this time it's composed of residents' families, not regulators.
Proposed by the Massachusetts Advocates for Nursing Home Reform and included in the state budget, the law makes it easier for families of nursing home residents to form councils and actively seek improvement in their relatives' facilities, the Boston Globe reported.
The law allows states to fine nursing homes for hindering the formation of councils or retaliating against the residents whose family members speak out in the councils. Nursing homes have five days to respond to council requests in writing, according to the Globe.
