Deadly nursing home fire spurs lawsuit
LTC Liability Monitor, July 28, 2004
The family of a resident who was injured last year in a fire at Greenwood Health Center in Hartford, CT-and died three weeks later-filed a lawsuit against the facility's management company, reported the Associated Press (AP).
The lawsuit against Lexington Highgreen Holding, Inc., alleges Greenwood was severely understaffed and did not provide emergency training to its employees. The resident was treated for smoke inhalation and died three weeks later in another nursing home-but her death was not formally linked to the blaze and she was not officially identified as a victim, according to AP.
The charges were filed on the heels of report by the Government Accountability Office, which concluded inadequate staff response during the fire contributed to the resident deaths.
