Senate approves medical error reporting system

Physician Practice Advisor, July 27, 2004

The Senate approved legislation to set up a confidential, voluntary reporting system for doctors and hospitals to divulge information on medical errors without fear of legal ramification, the Washington Post reports.

According to a study cited in the bill, medical errors cause 98,000 deaths a year. Tracking errors in patient care will be valuable in preventing future mistakes.

"For even one American to die from an avoidable medical error is a tragedy," Sen. Edward Kennedy told the Post. "That thousands die every year is a national disgrace and an urgent call to action."

Before moving forward, the bill will need to be reconciled with a comparable bill passed by the House in March.
