KY hospital denies allegations of unsanitary conditions

Infection Control Monitor, July 9, 2004

Officials at Jewish Hospital (Louisville, KY) are adamantly rejecting allegations that unsanitary hospital conditions led to the sickness of patients there.

In a June 30 prepared statement, the president of Jewish Hospital HealthCare Services, Hank Wagner, denied allegations filed by 20 families from Kentucky and Indiana that patient protective procedures weren't followed that led to patients or their relatives becoming ill.

The lawsuits accuse Jewish Hospital of gross negligence by allowing dangerous conditions to exist even though a growing number of people were getting sick with infections, The Courier-Journal (Louisville) reports. The suits further allege that, among other complaints, the hospital lacked enough nurses and cleaning staff, and that blood and feces were left uncleaned on floors and walls.

The majority of the complainants allege that they became infected with bacteria known as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Hospital officials say that MRSA is a common bacteria that hits critically ill patients, and is not unique to their facility.
