Nursing home fined $20,000 for improper transfer
LTC Liability Monitor, July 8, 2004
Illinois health officials fined Apostolic Christian Home of Eureka $20,000 after a resident died during a mechanical lift transfer from her bed to a wheelchair, the [Bloomington, IL] Pantagraph reported.
The resident fell from the lift and suffered head injuries, leading to a blood clot that caused her death four days later. The state Department of Public Health's report noted three staff members should have been present during the transfer, instead of the two present at the time of the injury.
Health officials also ordered the facility to review resident safety policies, its use of mechanical lifts, and review job duties with direct-care staff.
