CA hospital evacuates after bomb threat
Healthcare Security Weekly, July 6, 2004
Central Valley General Hospital staff and patients evacuated the Hanford, CA, facility last week after receiving a bomb threat, The Sentinel reports.
Sometime in the morning, the hospital's main switchboard received a phone call from an unknown person saying a bomb would explode in 10 minutes. Hospital officials contacted police and security immediately.
"The hospital has a safety plan that was implemented and we started the evacuation process immediately," says Nicole McGrath, director of hospital marketing and communications. "We are trained on (situations such as) this throughout the year so when we do have something like this come up, we know how to proceed without waiting for the police."
Patients and staff waited over a half hour before returning to the facility.
Police discovered nothing suspicious at the facility and are investigating the phone call.
