Tennessee Governor signs nursing home sprinkler bill
LTC Liability Monitor, June 24, 2004
Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen last week signed a bill requiring sprinkler systems in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and other homes for the aged, the Associated Press (AP) reported.
The law requires facilities to submit a plan for sprinklers and install them within a certain timeframe-by 2006 for nursing homes, and 2007 for residential homes for the elderly.
Additionally, facilities must have electronic smoke detectors with battery back-up in all sleeping rooms, day rooms, corridors, and other support areas within 90 days of its effective date of July 1, according to AP.
Tennessee lawmakers introduced the bill in the wake of a fatal nursing home fire last September.
