OIG: Alabama too slow in handling abuse complaints

LTC Liability Monitor, June 24, 2004

Alabama's survey agency falls short when it comes to investigating, tracking, and monitoring physical and sexual abuse in the state's nursing homes-and changes must be made, according to a report by the Office of Inspector General (OIG) released this month.

The OIG concluded the survey agency did not investigate abuse allegations within established timeframes, resulting in a four-year backlog of complaints. Furthermore, the survey agency did not update the Alabama Certified Nurse Aide Registry in a timely manner, thus increasing the risk of abusive caregivers gaining employment.

The OIG recommended the state improve tracking and monitoring procedures, cite nursing homes that fail to report abuse, and request CMS' assistance when backlogs occur.
